Hey-hey kids, It’s everyone’s favourite Canadian Jerk! Been struggling with a new character model over the course of the week and decided to take a break. I then came across some Scott Pilgrim Turn tables on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s tumblr and whipped this up largely in a day.

I have to say that I am very much a fan of the Scott Pilgrim series even if admittedly I only got into it a short time before the film hit theatres. Having read the comics in their entirety and having watched the film several times I honestly think that the film missed the mark a bit. Granted they did have a lot of content to fit into one film it lost the gradual realization in the books that Scott was far more of a jerk than how the book necessarily portrayed him as. He’s pretty jerky when introduced of course but it was more of the harmless, inconsiderate variety. It’s only through more being revealed to the reader and Scott that everything comes into place and you realize how harmful of a person he can be. That journey of awareness really made the books for me. In the film it just didn’t feel like we were looking at how Scott Initially saw himself. He was just a straight up jerk and we did see him realize that towards the end but the audience journey was absent.

That’s how I feel anyway. I can’t get to sleep and this is what I’m doing instead.

Posting all of the “Bravest Warriors” models I made for fun last week.

Beth Tezuka as voiced by Liliana Mumy

Chris Kirkman as voiced by Alex Walsh

Danny Vasquez as voiced by John Omohundro

Wallow as voiced by Ian Jones-Quartey

"Bravest Warriors" Created by Pendleton Ward for "Frederator" and "Cartoon Hangover"

Check it out, the showrunner is Breehn Burns the creator of the fabulous “Dr. Tran” and there’s even a really rad comic book out from “KaBOOM!” currently written by Kate Leth with Art by Ian McGinty.

You can find the show here.

Was bored so I made something to watch you all back with. For security reasons of course.

The Fourth “Bravest Warriors” Model I’ve made. Wallow came last largely due to well how large his design is, Could not even fit the Front on view I had rendered into the composition. Was going to model a version of Pixel into his glove but well, I’m pretty sure everyone has forgotten about that thing. lol

I don’t want it to ever come down to me choosing between groceries or purchasing a new tier package via comcast to be able to access tumblr or DeviantArt (let alone not guaranteeing I’ll even be seen by my customer base since they may not want to pay out their asses either). It doesn’t seem important to most, but I do 90% of my business online entirely.

Not writing related, but this is incredibly important. While we pay for service via ISPs, the internet has been a relatively free space where everyone, no matter their income level, is able to connect, access a wealth of information, and express themselves. The Internet has become a major part of our culture as human beings and the notion that ISPs might be able to limit what sites I can access unless I pay them more is utterly sickening. A lot of us are cash strapped as is, and I’d rather not be limited even more by someone else’s greed. Net Neutrality is essential and I hope you guys will understand why it needs to remain.

As I understand this ruling, it means that businesses now have to pay extra to ISPs to have access to their websites through that ISP provided at a reasonable speed. If you don’t pay, users’ access to your website will be slowed to a crawl - so independent people and small businesses can forget about getting onto that high speed access tier.
This means that the American internet is going to be firmly under the control of those who have the most money. You’ll only get to see the content of those who can pay the ISPs to provide access at a reasonable speed. This means that you can expect to see skewed representation of just about everything, with those bigger businesses who can afford to pay ISPs a premium for access deciding what you can and cannot read, view and consume on the internet.
This is not something that we have in the UK. Our ISPs compete with each other to provide higher speeds, better services and lower prices, but because there’s a monopoly in the US of a few ISPs who provide services, they can afford to do this to you. You can’t go anywhere else, after all.
Everyone in the US needs to sign that petition, call their representatives, write angry letters and do whatever you can to tell your government that this ruling is Not Okay.

Maybe you guys are sick of this post but It’s really important to freelance artists and pretty much everyone who uses the internet, so here it is again.  \o0o/

Because it’s terrifying… Spread the word before it’s the new norm.

Reblogging because while I’m unsure of how it will affect me in Canada presently, it’s gonna spill over here eventually and is probably already in the works.

The Third in an unknown numbered series. Beth Tezuka of the “Bravest Warriors.” Simplified the hair a bit too much but hey, I’m just doing these for practice and for fun.

I foresee myself doing Wallow and Plum at some point as well. I have a lot of spare time this week so we’ll see. Lol

Originally we wanted to have 2D sprites for characters and a 3D isometric view for background objects. This proved to be complicated mainly because there was a need to keep the resolution intentionally low so the 3D wouldn’t look so smooth compared to the low res sprites. There was also the problem with adding proper collisions to the 2D sprites. We didn’t really have the time or proper tools to render it correctly as we liked so we opted to just make the game full 3D. This is a minor setback but the sprites actually proved to be good references in keeping the style simple.

The textures are still very low res to fit the simplistic look of the game and still very pixelated (See: Megaman Legends). We used lights with ramp shaders to essentially paint the model. Each section of the character has various lights attached via light linking to control where the lights do and don’t hit. Then we simply bake the lights into the texture and draw any extra details over it. We could have used toon shaders and have dynamic lighting but we wanted a specific oldschool style where there was no such thing as dynamic lighting much like old ps1 games. Plus it’s easier to control static lights on a texture vs unpredictable environment lighting. The Zombie for example, has her face shaded to cover her eyes, that look would be tarnished if she was suddenly lit up with several scene point lights.

-Alex-

But yeah, these models were kind of a collaborative effort between our entire 3D branch and ultimately I think the game will be more indicative of our skills as a whole even though the Sprite based characters would have been fun.

We hope to have a demo of in game footage to show you as soon as possible so don’t forget to stay tuned.

-Dave-

An update for the Duneworld’s “Over my Dead Body” we ended up having to go through some minor changes in order to progress but it’s looking good so far.

Made a Chris Kirkman to go with my Danny Vasquez! Man, these are fun characters to do. Simple but complex enough to take the better part of an afternoon mulling over. Might do the entire crew.

Was bored and looking for something fun to do to get some Maya time in today. A few posts by the Frederator Blog got me in a “Bravest Warriors” kind of mood so I took some design sheets I found and modeled Danny Vasquez.

I don’t think I managed to make the hair or the hood as on model as I could have but I eventually called him done and played around with some toon shaders. I think I did a solid job.

Here are some of the prop models for the Duneworld’s upcoming title “Over My Dead Body.” As you can see here we have various office and mechanical equipment pieces to benefit the look and feel of the industrial setting of the game. All of them being very low polygon count.

This set of models were made by both Evan Hiltz and myself.

In any case be on the look out for these elements and more in “Over My Dead Body” and if you’re bored feel free to check out "VIDdEO" or any one of our past games.

-Dave Baldwin-

I showed off some of the models for “Over My Dead Body” over at the Duneworld blog a few moments ago. Check ‘em out, yo!

The Sprites of "Over My Dead Body" Update.

duneworldcollective:

Hey, Alex here! I’m doing sprites for “Over My Dead Body.” The characters can face in a total of 8 directions. At first I thought I only had to make 5 and reverse the other 3, but I ended up wanting to at least redo the lighting/rips, and “on model” pose. Thank goodness the shading is very simple…

My good buddy Alex is doing the Sprite art (among other things) for the Duneworlds “Over My Dead Body” and he’s being kind enough to share what he has so far with the (Non-Dune) World.

Low Polygon count forklift model as a prop for the Duneworlds “OVER MY DEAD BODY.”

In the state in which this was rendered in it was roughly 1400 polygons. I was able to trim it down to less than 900 for the final in game model.

Made in Autodesk maya.

The Dune World Presents: "OVER MY DEAD BODY"

duneworldcollective:

imageOnce upon a time, in the future. The World is a bleak and dangerous place ruled by corporations. You are Noël Brody an underemployed scientist for Mortiga Consolidated. When your healthcare research is re-purposed as a weapon you protests are met with with violence. Having been experimented…

This is the project me and the Duneworld have cooking up for what looks like the next two months. I really think this is a solid concept and we just need to execute it the best that we can. The response on “VIDdEO” was pretty amazing so it’s kind of neat to be making something knowing that folk have expectations. I think folk will like what we have in the works though. Stay tuned for more “OVER MY DEAD BODY”

"VIDdEO" Reception? Crystal.

duneworldcollective:

When we here at the DuneWorld Collective launched “VIDdEO" last week we would have never thought that it’d be received so well.

But here we are a week later and “VIDdEO” has been mentioned by PC Gamer on their “Best Free Games of The Week” column and was given a very kind video review…

Updated the DuneWorld with a thank you to the warm reception and exposure “VIDdEO” has been getting. Seriously, PC Gamer? That’s an amazing honor.

These are the prop models I made for the DuneWorld Collectives “VIDdEO.”

They were the majority of my contribution to the game and I spent a lot of time on them, the Magnum in particular. But in any case I felt that you never really got a good look at the models during gameplay so I rendered off this quick display. In hindsight I could have put more into some of them and I plan on making the magnum even better.

I hope you dig them, and be sure to be on the look out for more Duneworld.
